What's the record all about?
The record John proposed with is a 7-inch single of Denim's "Summer Smash." In the indie world 7-inch singles are often the medium of choice, often containing tracks not on albums and including label catalogs and posters and other inserts.

The couple are big fans of Felt, Denim, and Go-Kart Mozart, all led by English would-be pop legend Lawrence Hayward. They had a mutual Facebook geek-out over "Summer Smash" back in 2009 and the single's personal and broader provenance came up in conversation often when John and Maura began dating.
Maura got John the "Summer Smash" cassette single for his birthday. He didn't even know a cassette existed, confirming her own legend as a most thoughtful gift-giver. John finally tracked down a vinyl copy in October 2016, intending it to be a Christmas present. The couple started discussing marriage and the chance at a unique proposal presented itself.

For Maura's birthday, John wrote the proposal on card stock and slipped it inside the record sleeve. When she opened the gift, he asked her to check for inserts!
